Successfully Motivating Students

Many people believe that the way to motivate students to study involves some type of punishment. For example, if Johnny refuses to do his schoolwork, Johnny is disciplined. I’m here to tell you that rewarding students is much more effective than disciplining them. How do you motivate a student to do his/her work? Here are the steps:

  1. Set up a list of daily chores/responsibilities, and post that list somewhere the student can easily see it.
  2. Each day, keep track of how many chores/responsibilities the student has met.
  3. Pass out tickets, dried beans, etc. at the end of each day depending on the number of chores/responsibilities the student has met. Give the student a sandwich bag in which to keep his/her tickets/beans, etc.
  4. The student then collects enough tickets/beans to earn something. That something will change depending on the student’s age. For example, that something could be having a friend come over or saving up enough to earn a prize. The prize doesn’t have to be monetary. A student can earn TV time or time playing video games.
  5. If this doesn’t work, the reward is not motivating enough.
